Join Firefighter Lucy and her wellbeing dog Blue as they embark on exciting adventures!

Lucy has dedicated over 16 years to serving as a firefighter in the UK Fire and Rescue Service, adeptly responding to emergencies and guiding teams through some of life’s toughest moments. Accompanying her is Blue, her calm, clever and comforting trauma and wellbeing dog.
Together, they embark on adventures, with Blue supporting people in crisis and spreading calm, connection and compassion wherever they go. Lucy affectionately refers to Blue as her “Buffer and Bridge” The buffer that softens life’s hardest edges and the bridge that helps her reach those who need a friend the most.
Their inspiring real-life partnership has led to the creation of the Lucy and Blue series, a delightful children's book that celebrates bravery, teamwork and heart. Through these stories, children not only learn important safety lessons but also discover that heroes come in all shapes, shades, sizes and some even smelling of biscuits!
At Lucy and Blue, our mission is to inspire young readers to believe they can be the heroes of their own story. Through uplifting stories, we aim to break down stereotypes, celebrate diversity and spark conversations about courage, kindness and inclusion in Emergency Services and beyond.
Founded by Senior Fire Officer Lucy Macleod and her wellbeing dog Blue, our children's book series highlights the real people and paws who ensure our communities are safe while offering valuable children's safety lessons.
Representation matters: when children can see it, they can be it.
When Lucy and Blue aren’t on duty, you'll often find them by the sea, enjoying adventures like walking, paddle boarding, collecting sea glass and watching the sun go down (with one of Blue’s favourite treats, of course.)
These quiet moments remind us what Lucy and Blue is all about: balance, wellbeing, and finding joy in helping others. Whether on a callout, in a classroom teaching children's safety lessons, or on the beach, Lucy and Blue embody the spirit of a firefighter, showing that bravery can be gentle, leadership can be kind and small acts of care can truly make a big difference.

Lucy is dedicated to addressing the lack of representation in children's books, particularly those featuring women in uniformed and traditionally male-dominated roles. Our stories aim to inspire young readers by showcasing diverse characters and encouraging them to aspire towards various careers. Join us in promoting inclusivity in literature.
Lucy is available to visit up to two schools per month, free of charge, to deliver bespoke sessions tailored to your pupils and setting. Visits can include a reading from a Lucy and Blue book, alongside age-appropriate discussion around representation, women in the fire service, and careers within the emergency services. Drawing on Lucy’s lived experience, sessions encourage pupils to challenge stereotypes, broaden their understanding of roles in society and recognise the importance of seeing themselves reflected in the world around them.
Sessions can be delivered with Lucy on her own, or with Blue as well and are designed to support and complement the following areas of the curriculum:
At the heart of every session is a simple but powerful message:
You can be who you want to. Not what others tell you to be.
